Hollywood stylist Illaria Urbinati spills her bag of fashion tricks.

November 1, 2024

Men are putty in her hands. And not just any men. We’re talking Ryan Reynolds, The Rock, Barry Keoghan, Bill Skarsgård, Donald Glover, ahem, Rami Malek. And the list goes on.

Celebrity stylist Ilaria Urbinati’s client roster includes some of Hollywood’s hottest men (and a few women too). She’s become famous for elevating style personas that shape-shift alongside Hollywood careers. She slays the red carpet—Met Gala, the Oscars, Cannes Film Festival—deftly becoming the not-so-secret weapon in a megawatt arsenal of star power.

Ilaria Urbinati talking
“I make actors look like movie stars,” says Urbinati, who lives with her family in LA. “The goal is to keep evolving their looks while staying true to who they are.”

There’s Chris Evans, whom she’s dressed from the early days in the The Nanny Diaries to his Marvel superstardom with The Avengers. And Dwayne Johnson, who came to Urbinati later in his career for a style transformation. And there are super cool stars like Donald Glover whom she “got to take into a different stratosphere.”

No matter the man, the goal is the same: “You decide what’s the best version of that person’s taste, and how to express that in clothing and keep the style relevant, timeless, and true to who they are.”

It’s no small feat. Born in Rome and raised in Paris, Urbinati was reared on cinema and style (her sister is the costume designer for director Luca Guadagnino). In fact, her major source of style inspiration comes from film.

Like most good stylists, Urbinati ad-heres to her own rules. In no particular order: Tuck in your knits. Ditch the skinny jeans. Opt for pleated pants that modernly recall Humphrey Bogart. Own a custom blue suit (not black). Lean hard into cashmere. Dress tonally. Always wear lighter colors on top, darker on the bottom.

And one more thing, she says, perusing the racks of icy blue dresses and violet accessories: “Have a good tailor. I call mine more than my mother.”
